Been hanging out in Greenland pt. 1

Hey yo!

Okay, so the blog kinda died after I left the US – whoops, that wasnt supposed to happen – but since it did I will have to write one of those long ass posts that feels like homework. Here we go.

First things first, when I arrived in Denmark I got picked up by some family I hadnt seen in a long time so it felt really good to catch up, sleep in and hang out with everyone.

After a couple of heavily jet-lagged days in Denmark I jumped on a plane from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq. Kangerlussuaq is always the first place you land when coming in from outside Greenland. Its a short 4 hour flight but I had to pay 1700 dkk to bring my skis with me, my screen was broken, the service onboard wasnt anything to write home about AND I got a nosebleed, so as you can probably imagine, I wasnt very psyched about Air Greenland. haha.

I didnt get a picture of either the cabin crew or my nosebleed, so you are going to have to settle with this shot of my broken screen.

After 3 hours at the Kangerlussuaq airport – which is an old American military base from WW2 – I got on my next flight, going home to Nuuk!

Nuuk is located at the beginning of the biggest fjord-system in the world, so coming in by plane is always crazy beautiful and it really made me feel like coming home!

Straight after coming home I spend 8-10 hours a day on the local ski hill. I didnt ski, I just hung out and helped with organizing and judging The Greenlandic Freeski and Snowboard Championships. Even thought we ran into a few problems the competition was a great success with over 50 competitors boys and girls at the age of 9 to 28, from 4-5 different towns, and the level and attitude especially from the younger guys was awesome to see.

The buttom part of the slopestyle course.

The Course consisted of a:

small jump

down-rail

down-flat-down box

down box

flat box or flat-down box

Fun little course on a slope that was a bit too steep and everything was hand- shaped/build, but it worked out good!

You can find results and other stuff  @ http://snowball.gl/

I know it wasnt much but that was my easter-break, and thats it for today – more to come tomorrow.

Daymare

I got on my flight and sat there for about an hour… then it got cancelled.

We got off and I was told I was rebooked for at flight tomorrow. So now I had to go out, get my bags, my back was killing me, find a shuttle and the hotel for which they gave me a voucher AND they couldnt rebook my Geneva – Copenhagen flight so the money I spend on that flight was straight out the window! I got pissed (and sad).

Then somehow the nice lady behind the counter found me a flight. Now I´m flying Denver – Franfurt, Frankfurt – Copenhagen. My bags got checked in all the way , I didnt have to pay for my overweight and I only arrive in Copenhagen a couple of hours late – everything is good again!

A lot of the things that has happened over the past 2 weeks is one of the craziest emotional roller coasters I have ever experienced! Holy f*ck.

Airports

Im back at Denver Airport for 4th time this year and for the last time of this season. During the next 24 hours I will go through Canada, Switzerland and end up in Denmark.

On Wednesday Ill head home to Greenland for first time in 2 years and 3 months. I cant wait to head back to my roots and talk to people about the old days instead of skiing and everything that comes with it. My guess is its going to be really nice to lean back and relax, but it will also make me really want to go skiing as soon as im ready to do that again – taking breaks must be some of the best motivation in the world.

I just eat Ben & Jerry´s ice cream, im listening to the new Gorillaz album and my back is doing fine this far. I hope it holds up for my long trip to Denmark.

Mayrhofen – Laax

We´re done in Mayrhofen for the time being and I am on my way to Laax to get ready for the european open. Its 4.03 AM right now and after 1 hour of sleep last night I am now 2 hours on my way and I have about 7 more hours to go until Im in Laax – 3 hours of waiting, 3 hours by train and about an hour by bus.

Nikolaj dropped me of at the train station in Munich where I am currently sitting just outside of Burger King where I figured they would have free internet, and they did, YES.

Nikolaj is on his way home to film some stuff for RedBull back in copenhagen and then he will head back to Mayrhofen with Rasmus to get some more ski footage. He is gonna put an edit together with some of the B-footage we got this week so look out for that.

Good morning

What to do now?

Oslo – Amsterdam

Yesterdays trip went well! We were about 1 hour late out of Amsterdam which got me a bit stressed about about making me Minneapilos – Denver fligh, but I made it so it was all good.

What wasnt good though, was that my skibag with everything I need to ski (skis, clothes, boots etc.) didnt make it. The people at the airline dont even know where it is, so thats a bummer!

“good” thing is that the weather isnt too good, so Im not freaking out yet – lets hope it stays that way till i get my skis…

So yeah… today I just hung out in my condo and walked around Frisco. Boring!

What I did do, while doing nothing (?) was buy stuff online… I bought a GoPro HD cam and a new camera, a Canon S90. I decided on the s90 mostly because of the size. I would really love to have a 4/3 compact of a full on SLR but Im just not sure if I would bring it with me as much when I wouldnt be able to put it in any given pocket… and since I Knew I was getting the GoPro HD, the lack of HD video on the S90 shouldnt be mush needed.

I should get the s90 tomorrow and the GoPro cam in a couple of days, at least thats something do fool around with when I cant ski…

I ate chinese dinner with some of the HappyPro guys – they just got up here after having stayed in Denver one night to buy a car. Im not sure which car they got, but its a huge van and it was only 2500$ – crazy american car-prizes!

My first ever "fortune"

Its hard to read on the crappy photo, but it says “You shall attain great wisdom with each passing year”

pretty stoked on that, haha.

Vierli

Nasjonal teateret

This weekend I went to Vierli to watch the TAC qualifiers and get some skiing done.

The trip started at the Nasjonal Theateret where I tok the train to Kongsberg together with Elin and Emma. There Dan picked us up, and then we drove towards Vierli through Rjukan…

Elin and Emma (in case you didn´t know, I lived in Rjukan the first 2 two years after I moved to Norway)

In Rjukan we picked up supplies for the weekend at the new Kiwi store, where we (off course) met some people I hadn´t seen in a looong time. (Rjukan has population of 3000.) That was fun.

Next day (saturday) was the Swagger Maxi Taxi TÆKK qualifiers… It was windy so they ended up using the whole day for the comp, and the snow was ROCK hard… so we just hung out.

All thru saturday I only skied 2 runs – about a gazillion runs less then I thought I would…

Ulrik Qualified for TAC which got me really stoked. No one deserves a break-thru more then him. Unfortunately he was the only one of my buddies who made it though…

Saturday night we celebrated a little bit, and it rained on sunday…

I had a great and fun Weekend – It was just really great to get out of the City – but it didn´t turn out as productive as I had hoped… oh well.

Here is what I thought about the "skiing part" of the weekend!

Here is what I thought about the "skiing part" of the weekend!

PS: Vierli had a really great park going really early! Let me quote what Joacim said after a few beers “Vierli is gonna be the new Breck for early season shredding”. We will see about that, but they are definitely one of the only resorts in Norway which “gets it”
